Acknowledging Changes In Emotions

We have a constant need for change. Change is considered natural and good but the reaction to it can be unpredictable, out of our control and irrational. Change is inevitable, but leaving behind what we know and used to do is almost as stressful as even if we choose to change ourselves.

Often changes in the workplace can stimulate the same stages as grief- shock and denial, anger and acceptance. The progression from one stage to the next may not be a smooth one, nor will it be the same for everyone involved.

There are times when acknowledging emotions gets difficult and it’s not everyone’s cup of tea to express emotions. Helping put creative ideas for a project or working towards self is a great way to channel energy and emotions.

Employees are more likely to progress through workplace change if they acknowledge their emotions, feelings, explore the facts, try to remain positive and build on a support network along with giving time to self to adapt to the new environment.

Ways Of Coping

Coping strategies fall into 2 categories:

  1. Escape-Avoidance Coping
  2. Positive-Proactive Coping

 

  1. Escape-Avoidance Coping:

Escape-Avoidance Coping is where one takes specific actions to avoid difficult situations, i.e. change. We even try to avoid our thoughts and feelings. It is a maladaptive form of coping.

  1. Positive-Proactive Coping:

Positive-Proactive Coping is an adaptive form of the coping process through which one prepares for the potential future stressors, averting them altogether. Positive Coping is when you acknowledge your emotions, build support and then accept change in a positive manner.

Most individuals use a mixture of both strategies at various points during the response to change, but Positive-Proactive Coping strategies have been found to have good long-term benefits.

Acknowledging your emotions and thoughts during difficult times make things easier to process. Learning to address emotions during change is crucial to the individual, team, and organizational performance. Workplaces which consider that emotional reactions to change should be acknowledged are always in a better position to harness positive energy in productive ways.
