Accessing Stress Support

If stress in the workplace starts interfering too much with your work performance, health, or personal life, it’s time to start acting on it. You can’t control everything in your work environment, but that doesn’t mean that you are powerless. Understanding one’s personal sense of stress is the critical part of process that enables coping mechanisms to develop.

  • Improve Communication: Share information with employees to reduce uncertainty about their jobs. Define the roles and responsibilities of employees. Make the communication between you and your employee friendly, open and efficient.
  • Offer EAP Services: EAP stands for Employee Assistance Program services. Establish counselling and support through EAP. Make sure that the employees are well aware of the support being available and when to access it. Issues may range from substance abuse to family to work related problems. Employees can benefit counselling from the EAP services available.
  • Offer A Range Of Wellness Activities: Providing 20 minutes break every two hours results in employee well-being. Exercise and relaxation techniques help lower stress response in the body. Holding stress management workshops for employees, building a friendly network of people who can support the organization’s well-being and practicing mindfulness activities within the organization helps reduce stress.
  • Cultivate A Friendly Social Climate: Provide opportunities for social interaction among employees. Establish a zero-tolerance policy for harassment. Create management actions consistent with organizational value.
  • Give Out Rewards & Appraisals: Give employees something meaningful and a timely feedback about their performances. Recognize employees for their work performances/accomplishments. Give appraisals to ensure objectives set are realistic and employee’s expectations are being controlled. Provide opportunities for career development.

Stress is specific to each individual. That person is important while managing stressful situations. It doesn’t matter how stressful your life is, or what do you do for a living, there are plenty of things that you can do to reduce your stress and regain control at work.
